- It was noticed in 1964 that many accidents occur when jetliners enter severe air turbulences. Studies revealed that pilot performance is compromised in many ways. To prevent this, flight crews should be properly restrained during all phases of flight. They should trust the gyrohorizon as the only reliable attitude indicator, and they should be aware of the fact that "railroad track" turbulences may terminate in unusually severe turbulences.
