- Summary:
- Use of the systems approach in mechanical harvest of cantaloupes led to a complete change in cultural practices. Engineers cooperated with plant scientists to coordinate both plant and machine characteristics which are compatible for the harvesting process. Under 1967 conditions operation of a two-row harvester would compare with hand harvesting at $2.05/hoursIn developing a bulk handling system for fruits, comparisons were made of in-transit damage occurring in standard lug boxes and 1000 lb capacity pallet bins on trucks having different suspension systems. Damage was least in 24 inches pallet bins transported on trucks having air ride suspension
