Future automotive control systems are being strongly influenced by a changing environment. New technology advances are providing vehicle control system design concepts which are more ideally suited to the man-vehicle-environment system which must be considered. The emphasis in this paper is on the evolutionary nature of the changes possible with application of the new technologies. The ultimate realization of semiautomatic control systems and eventually the fully automatic control system will be preceded by improvements in the three basic vehicle controls.
