- A mathematical study has been made of the extent of viscous heating in the cold-cranking simulator. In all cases, the temperature rise is so small that it can be neglected. The instrument is therefore suitable for use as a practical viscometer within the range of 1080 poise. The operating shear stress is constant at about 700,000 dynes/sq cm which is high enough to bring about almost complete shear thinning of a polymer-thickened (10W30) oil
