Specific areas of application include incipient failure detection, failure localization, and contingency rescheduling. Examples of recent NASA sponsored advances in the state of the art are stressed, with emphasis on defining the role of man and computer and on the technical and economic benefits to be gained by further development and/or adaptation of these techniques to airline operations
