Summary:
One obstacle to reliability comprehension has been the mass confusion created by those of us in the field of reliability who assume that everyone knows all about reliability. There is also the use of technical jargon which is foreign to many. Thus, we have alienated the very people to whom reliability knowledge can be most beneficial.Specifically, the designer must be familiar with reliability techniques, procedures, and terminology since reliability is a design parameter the same as is weight, cost, and performance. The reliability of his design must be optimized just as the other design parameters. The manager must be equally familiar with the reliability techniques, procedures, and terminology. He too, is responsible for the reliability of his product just as he is for performance, weight, and cost.Manufacturing, Test, and Quality Control personnel must be well versed in reliability because many well designed products have suffered degradation of reliability due to improper process control, improper test procedures and testing, or poor quality controls and inspection procedures.Through training programs, this paper will show how to bring reliability into proper focus relative to its basic position in the scheme of system design, development and growth.Unfortunately, the sophistication of reliability without constant revelation of new concepts and techniques and clear understanding by every responsible group and at every level, has impaired growth and progress in development
