- Summary:
- AbstractKnowledge of basic optics is necessary to understand lasers and holography. Diffraction, coherence, and interference are discussed. Coherence is shown to be necessary before interference can occur. Coherence is difficult to obtain with conventional light sources but is readily available from lasers. As the wavelength of light is small, it is destined to become an important industrial measuring tool. Existing interferometers are already performing some measuring tasks
