Summary:
THE need of intake-charge cooling for the suppression of detonation in highly supercharged engines is indicated by the authors of this paper. The relation of detonation-limited output to intake-charge temperature under numerous engine design and operating conditions is illustrated.Several different methods of reducing the intake-charge temperature are discussed and evaluated, special emphasis being put on the use of intercoolers, aftercoolers, and secondary-liquid injection. It is shown that the choice of any one of these methods depends largely on the type of engine installation and the use of the airplane
