- This paper is a critical review of the state-of-the-art in the utilization of modern high speed digital computers as engineering design tools, covering: the problem confronting the modern design engineer in the automotive industry which forces him toward computer usage; computer usage in engineering design processes and its inability to satisfy the demands of the design engineer; and modem input/output devices and time sharing system, which allow close man-machine communication and provide the means by which the engineer can more nearly computerize a total design process. The author redefines the design engineering function with the computer as a partner in the evolutionary steps from concept to final design of a component or end product
