- Summary:
- Laser ignition system is more effective and shows more benefits compared to conventional spark ignition system. A laser is a high energy electrode-less ignition source which create multi-point ignition easily and can extend the flammability range of combustible mixture. The multi-point laser ignition results in increase in the combustion pressure and temperature and decrease in combustion duration compared to single-point laser and spark ignition. In this study two-point laser ignition of methane-air mixture was studied numerically with help of simulation tool. Simulation was done with the initial chamber pressure of 1.01325 bar and chamber temperature of 298 K. Turbulent LES model was used for the simulation. The combustion pressure and combustion duration was calculated numerically for various equivalence ratios. The maximum combustion pressure of 3.96 bar and minimum combustion duration of 17 ms was observed for equivalence ratio of 1.29. The simulation results were compared and validated with the experimental results in the literature. The relative error between simulation and experimental results lies within 11%. So, the validated model was used to predict the net heat release from the combustion chamber. The maximum heat release from the combustion chamber was observed for the equivalence ratio () of 1.29 and minimum heat release for equivalence ratio () of 0.77. These numerical results of combustion characteristics of two-point laser ignition of methane-air mixture will be helpful for development of the two-point laser ignition system for the internal combustion engines
