Summary:
This paper describes a test aimed at comparing the fuel economy performance between two different engine oils. One oil (SAE 20W50 API SJ) was tested against another oil (SAE 5W30 API SJ Low Friction - LFO) used in the initial fill of Ford vehicles. The latter oil has lower viscosity and is formulated using a friction modifier. Fuel economy experiments were carried out in the emission laboratory facility under controlled conditions, avoiding external influences during the tests. Results show that the average fuel economy due to the use of the Low Friction Oil is 5.2% for an urban cycle and 2.8% for a highway cycle during the 15.000 km of oil usage
