- Summary:
- New fuel systems for diesel engines require soft magnetic parts. Their small size, complex shape, and quantities have prompted a reevaluation of Metal Injection Molded (MIM) parts for this application. Past evaluation of the MIM Fe-3% Si parts had inferior properties as compared to wrought parts. Recent improvements in MIM processing and continued pressure to decrease cost led to a new evaluation of MIM Fe-3% Si parts. A MIM fuel injector solenoid armature was tested against a wrought armature. The MIM Fe-3% Si armature properties compared favorably to the wrought Fe-2.5% Si armature. The conclusion was the MIM armature could replace the wrought armature without compromising part performance
