Summary:
Due to installation in a small engine room, Diesel Particulate Filters - DPF - for construction vehicles must be compact as well as have a long life and maintenance interval. Since these are contradictory factors, there is a trade-off between them and an accurate life-estimation method is needed. A new, simple life-simulation method was tried, assuming a load cycle that is characteristic of each construction vehicle. It proved to have good agreement with experimental data. Based on the calculations, a newly developed filter with 300 cells per square inch - cpsi - instead of the current 100 cpsi was found to have both long life and compactness. The size is almost equal to the current conventional muffler. To avoid cell damage caused by partially accumulated soot, various inlet contours were examined to get uniform flow
