Summary:
The process used in selection test development is dependent on the theories and methodologies selected. Over the past 17 years, certain theories and methods have been merged to produce selection tests with high predictive validity. One aspect that has contributed to such test development is the emergence and formalization of the field called knowledge engineering. The development of a methodology for Task Analysis, called the Small Group Delphi Paradigm (SGDP), using subject matter experts (SME's) and a highly structured environment, has been coupled with Fleishman's work on underlying abilities. This merger has produced several selection tests as well as training products.This paper presents a model for developing selection test batteries that uses Fleishman's underlying abilities work coupled with the SGDP. The focus will be on air carrier pilot selection. It will then indicate how to use the SME data gathered in developing such tests to concomitantly develop quality aircrew training
