Summary:
To fulfill complex market requirements, a multi-organizational teaming approach sometimes provides the swiftest and most sophisticated solutions. The Java Telematics Technology middleware effort undertaken by Sun Microsystems is an excellent example of this method. A complete telematics "ecosystem" was constructed, consisting of a close knit, set of partners needed to fulfill end-to-end telematics system requirements. But this approach must carefully arbitrate between the conflicting goals of each partner, track industry standards efforts such as OSGi, AMI-C and the Java Community Process and incorporate the needs of the ultimate "consumers" of this technology, Telematics Service Providers and Auto Manufacturers. This paper discusses the challenges of this approach, the process undertaken and experiences learned from this effort
