- Summary:
- The present contribution gives an overview of the use ofdifferent simulation tools for the optimization of injectionparameters of a diesel engine. With a one-dimensional tool, thebehavior of the mechanics and fluid dynamics of the entireinjection system is calculated. This simulation providesinformation on the dynamic needle lift, injection rates, pressures, etc. The flow within the injector is simulated using athree-dimensional CFD tool. By use of a two-phase model, it ispossible to analyze the cavitating flow inside the injector and tocalculate the effective nozzle hole area as well as the exit flowcharacteristics. Mixture formation, combustion and pollutantformation simulation is performed adopting three-dimensional CFD.In order to provide the initial and boundary conditions for theengine CFD simulation and to optimize the engine cycle performancea one-dimensional tool is adopted. The way that these simulation tools can be applied together willbe demonstrated on relevant application examples from the enginedevelopment showing how the two main challenges - fuel consumptionand pollutant emissions - can be met
