Summary:
1. AbstractThis study presents a computational model to simulate the pitting or spalling in universal joints due to rolling contact fatigue. The model was simplified to two dimensions and plane strain condition was considered. Nowadays it's been used empirical methods in order to determine the life of universal joints' bearings. The result depends on many tests that are expensive and long. With the increase of competitiveness in the industry, time means money so numerical simulations are very well justified. This study presents a first trying in using the Fracture Mechanics methods to predict bearing life in universal joints. The results of the numerical model will be compared with practical results. The geometry of the pits as well as the relation between the stress intensity factor and crack length will be presented
