Summary:
Three-dimensional thermal modelling and transient 1-D emissions simulation tools have been used to assess the performance of 5 maniverter designs. The analysis has shown that high temperatures can be expected on components situated in the underbody compartment near to the maniverter, However, the introduction of a heatshield will reduce significantly the temperature of these components. It was also shown that changing a cast maniverter to stainless steel air-gapped is equivalent to reducing the primary lengths by 100mm, in some cases, on the cumulative emissions. The simulations have highlighted the benefits of using numerical tools in optimizing the design of exhaust maniverters
