Summary:
Noise is increasingly becoming an important subject for transmission engineers. Gear whine is a tonal noise that is noticeable to passengers even at relatively low levels.Much work has focussed on reducing Transmission Error (TE), which is a major source of the noise. However, there is little understanding of how a multiple shaft, geared system responds to this excitation. This paper outlines a numerical simulation method that predicts the dynamic behavior of a gearbox system. An example analysis shows how it includes coupled torsional, lateral and axial vibration. It compares well with test data and helps the engineer to gain an understanding of the system dynamics
