Summary:
This paper evaluates the historical array of available methodologies for analysis of narrow object frontal impacts and addresses each method's accuracy in determining collision characteristics. Several previously reported methods spanning the last 25 years of research are considered and each method's assumptions are examined in assessing impact speed, change in velocity and/or equivalent barrier speed as compared to crash test data. Those methods that have become technologically dated are discussed. Analytical methods are recommended which are proven to demonstrate a high degree of accuracy in predicting collision characteristics of narrow object frontal impacts. Comparison of each method's analytical predictions leads to a discussion of potential errors and/or limitations of the various analytical models. Recommendations are made based upon currently available crash test data. Finally, a real world accident scenario is presented in which evaluation of such a collision is considered utilizing each of the aforementioned methodologies and results are discussed
