- Summary:
- US, European and a few Asian countries are developing their own intake valve deposit(IVD) tests in order to evaluate their domestic fuels using domestic engines. The current test using a Hyundai 1.6L DOHC engine was established as an in-house engine test method and has been applied since 1993. Many additive performance tests are reasonably well carried out and it reveals that the response of additive performance would not be enough to discriminate between test results for the improved additives. Also the 1.6L DOHC engine is no longer produced.A new engine test method to evaluate a fuel for IVD was developed using the 2.0L SOHC four cylinder domestic engine made by Hyundai Motor Company as a supplement to the 1.6L DOHC. This new engine is one of the best high sales volume units in Korea and has been continuously produced since 1988.This paper describes a new IVD test method for developing the procedure, test protocol and characteristics. To evaluate the test severity, screening of additive performance and repeatability, the new IVD test was performed using different additives and dosage levels. Also, the new IVD test was compared with the previous 1.6L DOHC engine test and USA or European IVD tests in order to demonstrate validity of this test method
