Summary:
In future passenger vehicles electrical high power consumers will be applied. This publication deals with solutions based on lundell-type alternators for the electrical power supply.Water-cooling and significant reduction of losses will be discussed as short-term steps to increased output and efficiency. As further measures to improve performance permanent magnets for leakage flux compensation and power electronics may be used. Applying a step-up converter allows the generation of up to 6 kW electrical power at increased alternator speed. The efficiency is also considerably improved compared to today's applications.Additional steps of development with starter-alternators in evolution towards hybrid as well as electric vehicles and the integration of high output alternators in the drivetrain and energy management is mentioned in the outlook
