Summary:
Riveting is the preferred method of assembling load-bearing aluminum and titanium airframe structures, however this process requires high loads and access to both sides of the structure. We discuss the feasibility of a blind fastener inflation technique for structural joining. This approach only requires access to one side of the structure, greatly simplifying fastener installation. Preliminary experiments have demonstrated inflation of aluminum alloy rivets with interference fit comparable to that of a conventional rivet. A preliminary design for a compact, low-impact fastening tool suited for manual or robotic installation is discussed
