- The vibration transfer functions from the floorpan attachment points of occupied automobile seats to the seat surfaces contacting the occupant are typically given in terms of the magnitude, often called the transmissibility. Averages over multiple occupants are often used due to the strong dependence upon individual subject properties. Modal analysis of such data would be useful, but requires phase as well as magnitude. However, averaging of either wrapped or unwrapped phase presents significant problems. Averaging of the entire complex transfer function avoids these problems, but may give a magnitude that is different than the average of the individual magnitudes. In this paper, we analyze the data for several input/output axis combinations for various real seats with respect to this issue. We show that for the special case of multiple human occupants of the same seat, the magnitude of the complex average and the average magnitude are generally very close, allowing the computation of relevant modal analysis results
