Summary:
Nowadays, one of the main problems working with automated applications in the assembly of aeronautical structures, such as drilling or fastening, is to achieve the high accuracy needed in positioning and orientation of the end-effector in order to drill precise holes and install the correct fasteners. The next step is knowing whether or not the fastener was correctly installed and in case of incorrect installation re-calibrating the end-effector.As operations to measure and check if a fastener is properly installed have not been yet automated (or are very time consuming) every time that a fastener has to be measured, the automatic fastening process must be stopped which highly increases the time required in these assembly operations. Therefore, full automation will strongly depend on the development of measurement systems accurate enough that, integrated with drilling and fastening machines, will allow a dynamic calibration, measuring and controlling of fastener installation in real time, avoiding time lapses. Moreover, feeding this information back to the machine controller will lead to a real self-controlled automated process. The Artificial Vision System herein explained has been developed within the frame of AIRBUS ESPAÑA Research and Technology project IC-ASSY
