- Summary:
- Aim of this work is to present and discuss the possibility andthe limits of two zone models for spark-ignition engines using adetailed kinetic scheme for the characterization of the evolutionof the air-fuel mixture, while an equilibrium approach is used forthe burnt zone. Simple experimental measurements of knockingtendency of different fuels in ideal reactors, such as rapidcompression machines and shock tube reactors, cannot be directlyused for the analysis of octane numbers and sensitivity ofhydrocarbon mixtures. Thus a careful investigation is very useful, not only of the combustion chamber behavior, including themodelling of the turbulent flame front propagation, but also of thefluid dynamic behavior of the intake and exhaust system, accountingfor the volumetric efficiency of the engine.Research and Motor Octane Numbers are evaluated by numericalsimulations based on a quasi-dimensional, two-zone combustion modelembedded in a 1D thermo-fluid dynamic code, in which detailedkinetic schemes in the unburnt mixture has been introduced. Finallythe effects of different mixture components are discussed on thebasis of preliminary comparisons with experimental data
