Summary:
This Paper describes new design concept of composite Footrest, which is a structural load carrying part in two-wheelers. Glass fibre Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) is used for special grade Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) for design and development. The paper demonstrates the benefits of use of composites for primary structural two-wheeler parts for improved performance through optimized designs and weight reduction. The example of Footrest development is considered to substantiate the claim of weight saving and cost reduction. Design approach for material and process selection, tool development is explained. Detail FEA has been carried out to evaluate the design options. Key issues of customer's concern for painting and recyclability are discussed briefly
