Summary:
The strong demand on the OEM's to reduce fleet fuelconsumption (CO₂ emission) enforces the technology development offuel-efficient vehicle concepts. To achieve these goals R&Dprograms were launched to bring new powertrain concepts to market,e.g., hybrid powertrains as a combination of conventional andelectrical systems, full electrical powertrains with rangeextenders as well as IC-engine-equipped powertrains with downsizedcombustion engines. The market success of these concepts will bedecided by the realizable compromise of fuel consumption, drivingdynamics and customer acceptance. The question, which optimumpowertrain concept can be delivered to the customer, must take intoaccount the cost/benefit ratio. With increasing interest in the development of Hybrid ElectricVehicle (HEV) and Full Electrical Vehicles (FEV), the demand forcomprehensive system design and analysis to support the PowertrainDevelopment Process (PDP) is rising. More advanced mathematicalmodels of propulsion system components (both steady state anddynamic) are requested. This paper shows the approach setting up a development platformbased on consistent simulation tools which are applied throughoutthe entire development process adjusting the simulation models tothe requirements of the various development phases from conceptphase to testing.Examples of such consistent methodologies together with theintegration of simulation and testing tools are shown for the keytasks in the PDP as there are - Thermodynamics, combustion andemission development; - Mechanics development; - Virtual thermalmanagement system development; - Hybridization and electrification(detailed presented); and - Calibration development
