- Summary:
- Premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) is an interestingalternative to conventional diesel combustion, as it allows verylow emission levels for part load operation. The difficult controlof the onset of combustion is an obstacle to the implementation ofPCCI. In a recent study, different mixtures of gasoline and dieselfuel have been used in a modified diesel engine to delay theignition and thus to allow for a substantial premixing time. Forthese cases, very low levels of particulate emissions have beenreported. However, the emissions of CO and NOx wereconsiderably high.In this study, combustion and pollutant formation in theabove-mentioned modified diesel engine are simulated using therepresentative interactive flamelet (RIF) approach. A detailedchemical reaction mechanism for a mixture of n-heptane, iso-octane,toluene, and ethanol, serving as surrogate fuel for thediesel-gasoline blend, is used for the simulations. By systematiccomparison of experimental and numerical results, an improvedunderstanding of PCCI combustion is achieved and the origins of theCO and NOx emissions are identified. Finally, measuresto reduce these emissions while keeping the low PM levels aresuggested
