- Summary:
- For more than 20 years Mubea strives to develop and producehighly stressed suspension springs and other lightweight automotivesteel products. Despite continuous increase of load stress levelsof suspension springs it was possible to significantly reduce theweight of suspension springs while increasing robustness. As a successful supplier the company needs to address thecontinually increasing requirements of the automotive industry forreduced vehicle weight and CO₂ emission through strong efforts indesign and process optimization. Targeted now is a weight reductionof another 10% while further enhancing coil spring robustness. Inorder to achieve these targets Mubea has again optimized thealready established High Performance Process (HPP) and hasdeveloped a new and innovative method of designing coilsprings. To optimize coil spring design customized Finite Element (FE)software was developed and successfully implemented. This allowsfor appropriate distributing of working stresses along the coilspring profile. The objective is to achieve both, maximum weightreduction and maximum robustness, respectively. Suspension springsfeaturing this optimized spring design are described as "NewGeneration" coil springs. Mubea Coiling Programming System(MCPS) in combination with the Spring Setup Indicator (SSI) - a 3Dmeasurement system for coil springs - allows for efficient andhighly process capable rapid prototyping and mass production setupof "New Generation" coil springs.Using the example of the Mubea Side Load (SL) suspension springfor McPherson strut applications the HPP process technology and theformerly introduced spring design concept "NewGeneration" will be explained and discussed
