- The application of biodiesel as an alternative fuel forpetroleum diesel fuel is very effective for the reduction of CO₂emission, because biodiesel is produced from renewable biomassresources. In Japan, neat biodiesel derived from waste cooking oilhas often been applied to commercial vehicles. However, it ispossible that the difference of fuel properties betweenconventional diesel fuel and biodiesel causes the problems onexhaust emission characteristics of diesel engine. Therefore, it isnecessary to clarify the effect of biodiesel fuelling on exhaustemissions from commercial vehicles.Light-duty garbage trucks and heavy-duty diesel buses which wereactually fueled with biodiesel in Kyoto, Japan, were used for testvehicles in this study. The exhaust emissions from these vehiclesduring JE05 mode tests were compared between biodiesel derived fromwaste cooking oil and conventional diesel fuel.As a result, the application of biodiesel to older vehicles didnot cause a negative effect on the exhaust emissions. On the otherhand, biodiesel blending deteriorated NOx emission from newvehicles. In addition, other problems related to the use ofbiodiesel have been reported (e.g., oil dilution in vehiclesequipped with DPF, et cetera). Therefore, it will be necessary to modifyengine components for the improvements of safe and environmentalperformances when using biodiesel
