Summary:
Nowadays, due to the high competitiveness in the automotivemarket, the car manufacturers and the engine developers areconcentrating as many efforts as possible in order to diminish thelead-time to production and to promote cost reductions of theirengine developments. As a consequence, many systems and component tests are beingsubstituted by numerical simulations, allowing a significantreduction in the amount of engine and bench tests. The integrationof individual numerical simulation tools generates the philosophyof Virtual Engine Development, which is based on the concept ofsimulating as much as possible the entire engine as well as itscomponents behaviors. This paper presents the application of Virtual EngineDevelopment (VED) in a PSA 1.4l SI engine development. Theoreticalresults of engine performance as well as powercell componentsbehavior such as piston, rings, conrod, bearings, liner, engineblock and cylinder head, among others, are presented and discussed. Those simulations allowed a better knowledge of the entire enginesystem as well as the anticipation and solution of potentialproblems. To sum up, some numerical and experimental results comparisonsare presented. Furthermore, a discussion over the achievedlead-time and cost reductions allowed by the application of VirtualEngine in this engine development is also presented
