- Summary:
- The introduction of Flexfuel technology in Brazil in 2003brought an unquestionable advantage to reduce the emissions ofgreenhouse gases in automobiles when used with ethanol.Furthermore, the research to increase the efficiency in the use ofrenewable energy is crucial for the sustainability of theautomotive industry.Among the feasible technologies for achieving this goal, theDirect Injection Spark-Ignited engine (hereinafter referred to as aDISI engine) and the turbocharger are the most promising in shortand middle terms. The combined use of Direct Injection andturbocharger on an engine can promote the downsizing. Bothtechnologies are closer to the Brazilian reality and theTurbocharged DISI engine can even more be improved when used withthe biofuel ethanol through its inherent thermodynamicsadvantages. The objective is then to investigate the technical feasibilityof using a turbocharged DISI engine in the Brazilian market, andits combination with Flexfuel technology, considering thecharacteristics of the fuels available on this market
