- Summary:
- The transport industries face a continuing demand from customersand regulators to improve the acoustic performance of theirproducts: reduce noise heard by passengers and passersby; avoidexciting structural modes. In both the aerospace and automotiveareas, flow-induced noise makes a significant contribution, leadingto the desire to understand and optimize it through the use ofsimulation.Historically, the need for time-consuming, computationallyexpensive transient simulations has limited the application of CFDin the field of acoustics. In this paper are described efficientsimulation processes that, in some instances, remove therequirement for transient analyses, or significantly reduce thetotal process time through intelligent pre-processing.We will outline this process and provide both automotive andaerospace industrial examples, including analyses of highly complexgeometries found in real life. Section 2 describes a modelinghierarchy which includes steady-state, transient andfrequency-based time-periodic methodologies. Section 3 containsfour popular classes of application spread across thetransportation sectors: - Airframe noise simulation of a complexnose landing gear; - Aeroacoustics of avionic cooling rack in anAirbus cockpit; - Automotive sunroof buffeting with structuralimpedance; - Fan noise signature in the presence of gusts. For these case studies, the main focus is the prediction ofaeroacoustic noise sources. The propagation of noise to thefar-field is not considered here, though some qualifying commentsare made in section 2.4.
