Summary:
A collaborative CRADA [1] effort has been established between the US Army TACOM-TARDEC and Drive Dynamics LLC of Dallas, TX on the development of an advanced Run Flat Insert System. The CRADA defines further evaluation of Run Flat performance for military vehicles, such as the HMMWV and a comparison to present systems. To benefit the military, Drive Dynamics LLC has engineered an innovative multi-segment insert system, which positively attaches to current and/or legacy two-piece wheels. An elastomeric high strength formulated polymer material supports the increased payload to 4000+ pounds and sized to a larger rolling diameter of 25 inches. The insert system positively mounts on the centerline of the wheel and tire for better steering, acceleration, braking and control for the driver when tire failure occurs. The system does not require special tools for field installation and can be assembled in 15 minutes compared to the 2 hrs for existing designs. The polymer material mass increases "Ballistic Resistance" without distortion or fragmentation and maintains mobility
