Summary:
This paper describes how the Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) technique can be used very effectively for traction fluid development. A description of toroidal traction drives is given and the considerations for traction fluid development are discussed. Experimental traction data were used to construct a QSAR model which was in turn used to predict the traction performance of new molecules. In conclusion, the QSAR approach can aid development of novel traction fluids, reducing the amount of testing required to determine structure performance relationships, which results in faster development times and significant cost savings
