Summary:
The latest off-line NC Programming techniques at Airbus UK in Broughton have massively reduced programming times and increased quality in the wing skin assembly process. These techniques rely on using three-dimensional CAD data in the form ofThe introduction of a new CNC wing riveting machine necessitated the re-programming of Airbus A320, A321, A330 and A340 wing panel assemblies. Some of these aircraft were designed more than 15 years ago using 2D CAD software, however the latest NC Programming techniques rely on using detailed 3D CAD data. This paper will explain the development of new 2D to 3D mapping techniques for use in combination with knowledge-based NC programming techniques, and will identify the need for improvement, the existing methods of data preparation, the development of an efficient system and the inherent benefits associated with its implementation
