Summary:
Both the Matrix and the DC-link converters have qualities making each attractive in a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) application. This paper compares some of the advantages and disadvantages of each approach when used in a conceptual 13.6 Kg (15-ton), six-wheeled, combat HEV. This system consisting of a compact, 300 kW, 30 Krpm, permanent magnet synchronous generator, battery storage, and six, 42 kW, permanent magnet traction motors. Due to the confided space of the HEV, the key criterion in the motor drive selection process was determining which presented the minimum system volume. Our study compares the active components count, the size of the reactive components, and power routing topologies
