- Summary:
- Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Treg) are a specialized T cell subset that enforce peripheral tolerance and temper many types of inflammatory processes. Since their initial description there has been an interest in understanding how these regulatory cells influence the outcome of infection. Multiple studies have shown that the role of Treg cells during diverse infections is context dependent: certain challenges can lead to increased Treg cell functions that limit infection-induced pathology or promote pathogen replication. In contrast, some host responses results in loss of Treg cells that allow the expansion of effector T cell populations while there are also microbial strategies to promote Treg cell activity as a mechanism of immune evasion. Here, we conducted studies to investigate the role of various cytokine signaling axis on Treg cell biology during infection and homeostasis and highlight how these studies have provided fundamental insights into Treg biology
