Summary:
This qualitative study explored the experiences of 12 first-generation Latina school leaders in the Los Angeles metropolitan area amid the growing Latinx student population in U.S. schools. This study examines how first-generation Latina school leaders navigate structural barriers by drawing on their lived experiences and cultural wealth to implement practices that challenge systemic inequities and foster more inclusive K-12 educational environments. Data collected through individual and group pláticas revealed that participants redefined leadership by positioning their cultural identities as sources of strength and leadership capital. The findings highlight four core competencies demonstrated by these leaders: a commitment to lifelong learning, resilience in the face of adversity, a strong work ethic, and leading with corazón (heart). Participants employed culturally grounded strategies to challenge exclusionary school practices, build relational trust, and empower students and families. Rather than assimilating into dominant leadership models, they enacted leadership rooted in cultural authenticity and community responsiveness. In doing so, they developed humanizing leadership practices that resisted power structures and reframed obstacles as opportunities. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how first-generation Latina school leaders use their agency to transform educational spaces by employing leadership practices that center asset-based approaches to support and elevate historically marginalized students and their families
