Summary:
Reynold is dying of stomach cancer. He has resigned himself to starving to death, as his condition is gradually preventing him from eating normally. His missed encounter with death catches up with him, as the starvation inflicted upon him at Fort Dimanche prison rekindles dark memories. He uses the pretext of the last meals he is still able to eat to share them with his daughter, Vanessa, whom he hasn't seen in nearly 20 years. Initially hesitant, Vanessa agrees to see her father again. Then, with the help of her aunt, who owns a Haitian grocery store, she prepares Haitian dishes for him. As the meals progress, a ritual develops at Reynold's bedside; each traditional dish from his youth acts as a reminder of his past. He opens up and tells his daughter for the first time about the abuse he suffered, thus freeing himself from a heavy burden. Vanessa discovers who her father truly is: a loving man whose heart had been hardened by dictatorship.
