Notes:
"Phiz" = Hablot Knight Browne.
On cover: The works of Charles Dickens. Household edition. Pickwick papers. London, Chapman & Hall, 195, Piccadilly.
Printer statement at foot of page 400.
Two different bindings available. One is a publisher's binding of green cloth, emblematic; floral and geometric ornaments stamped in black, lettering and human figures gilt-stamped; back cover blind-stamped; yellow end papers. The other is bound in blue, illustrated paper covers. The edition statement is at the head of title and the cover lacks the series statement. The series, called Dickens's works, is printed on the spine edges of the individual gatherings.
Issued by Chapman and Hall in a new series of the complete edition of Charles Dickens known as the Household edition. Reset in large type on a quarto page, the series was furnished with entirely new illustrations by a fresh set of artists. The series could be purchased as penny numbers, monthly parts and bound volumes.
Text contained within a double line border on each page; two columns of text per page.
