Summary:
Glastonbury Past and Present was the brainchild of writer and teacher Alice Buckton (1867-1944) who was devoted to preserving the region's rich historic legacy. A contemporary article in The Times described the ambitious Glastonbury Past and Present as "the first film record of the history of a British town". In the shadow of Glastonbury Tor, locals re-enact their town's rich history through five dramatic episodes
Contents:
Episode One : Set around 64 AD, a wounded Burran stumbles into a Mendip encampment after a wild boar attack. His father, the Quantock Chief, arrives with his tribe in search of him. Joseph of Arimathea appears, preaching Christianity to the tribes
Episode Two : King Alfred, having defeated the Danes, chooses mercy over vengeance. He frees the captured Danes and offers them gifts
Episode Three : King Edward III, Queen Philippa, and the Black Prince arrive at the Abbey guest house. During their visit, a horse knocks down a Jewish boy, who is taken to the nunnery for care
Episode Four : During Elizabeth I's reign, the Tor Fair is in full swing. The Bishop blesses the last sheaf of corn. At the Hiring Fair, a girl disguises herself as a boy to work alongside her lover. Though discovered, the farmer hires them both. A morality play is performed, watched by William Shakespeare and friends
Final Episode : Iconic Glastonbury landmarks are showcased, including the Tor with St. Michael's Tower, the Abbot's Kitchen, Glastonbury Abbey, St. Mary's Chapel, Wearyall Hill, the Holy Thorn, and the Athelney stone commemorating King Alfred
