"This book is the third of four chronologically based volumes of the Advice and Support subseries in the U.S. Army's official history of the Vietnam War. As the subseries title implies, these books examine the U.S. Army's role in America's nation-building efforts in the Republic of Vietnam - more commonly known as South Vietnam - between 1954 and 1972. They particularly focus on the U.S. Army's role in helping South Vietnam organize, equip, train, and employ its armed forces during two turbulent decades of war and rebellion. As evidenced, creating a foreign army shares many of the challenges encountered in nation building writ large, particularly if, as was the case with Vietnam and the United States, the states involved have significantly different cultures, institutions, and traditions. This volume focuses on a brief, but critical, period between January 1964 and July 1965, when the apparent failure of U.S. nation-building activities led the United States to undertake a full-scale military intervention against Communist-led forces that seemed to be on the verge of destroying the nascent Republic of Vietnam"-- Provided by publisher.
