Historical Society copy Af415: Benjamin Franklin's copy. Contemporary calf, gilt. Dedicated to Franklin; inscription on verso of front endpaper: For Benjamin Franklin Esqr. from his most Obedient humble servant the Author; pencil number on verso of front endpaper: C21 N4; listed as "Dr Rush's Medical Dissertation" in "Medecine and Surgery"; signature on title: Benj. F. Bache.
Rush asked Franklin if he might dedicate the book to him; Franklin responded, 22 March 1768: "I shall have no reason to regret the Appearance of some Connection between us in the Circumstance of your Inscribing your Dissertation to me. I therefore make no Objection to your gratifying your Inclination in that respect; except that I imagine it might be more proper to dedicate an inaugural Oration to some of those Masters in the Medical Art, to whose Instructions in your Studies you have been most obliged" (P 15: 86).
