- This American edition is apparently a combination of volumes 1 and 3 of an English work whose 4 volumes appeared separately under various titles. The first was published in Canterbury in 1802 under title: A compendium of the veterinary art. The so-called 10th edition of v. 1 was published in London in 1812 with title: A treatise on veterinary medicine, containing a Compendium of the veterinary art. Vol. 3 was published in the same year with title: A treatise on veterinary medicine, in three volumes. Vol. iii containing practical observations on some important diseases of the horse. "The anatomy and physiology of the horse's foot ... with practical observations on shoeing" was published in 1801. Cf. Sir Frederick Smith, Early hist. of veterinary lit. London, 1909-30, v. 3, p. 90-105.
