- Eleanor S. Bemis was born and raised in Massachusetts in the early 1800s. She moved to Kansas Territory in mid-1855. She married Thomas Clarke Wells in 1856; she resided with him in Manhattan, Kansas, from 1865 on.

- Handwritten letter signed by the author to a Mrs. William G. Emerson, salutation "Dear Teacher." Bemis describes her pioneering experiences in Kansas. She describes her and her neighbors' illnesses, the geography, her living situation, prairie fires, and homesickness. In folder with envelope addressed to Mrs. Wm. G. Emerson, Springfield, Mass., Fort Leavenworth postmark. In folder with typewritten transcript.
