Biography/History:
Isabella L. Bird was an author, photographer, explorer, and naturalist. She was born in Yorkshire, England. Her father was a botanist. She traveled throughout North America, Asia, and the Pacific Islands, and wrote about her travels. She married Dr. John Bishop, a surgeon, in 1881. He died in 1886. In 1892 she was the first woman to join the Royal Geographical Society. She died in her home in Edinburgh in October 1904 after returning from a trip to Morocco.
