Doğan Kuban's last work: The "epic" book on Istanbul, bringing together the Pagan, Christian, and Muslim periods of the city, has been published. This last book by Doğan Kuban (1926–2021), one of Turkey's most important architectural historians and a wise thinker, is being released by Boyut Publishing Group. Kuban, who delivered this comprehensive work with great enthusiasm, stating it would be his "last book," examines Istanbul's millennia-long evolution and cultural transformation through a holistic perspective, encompassing the Pagan, Christian, and Muslim periods. Istanbul, Kuban's lifelong passion, is reshaped in this book through his unique power of observation and intellectual depth. Kuban interprets the city with the curious traveler's eye of Petrus Gyllius; offering a broad historical perspective starting from the founding of Byzantium, extending to Constantinople, and then to Ottoman Constantinople. The weight of Kuban's identity as an architectural historian is palpable in the book. Kuban masterfully compares the dome form of the Pantheon Temple in Rome with that of Hagia Sophia; the spiritual atmosphere of St. Peter's Basilica with the architectural integrity of the Süleymaniye Complex. With his unique interpretations, he tells the story of Istanbul in his own words, encompassing a wide range of topics from the city's pagan structures to Byzantine sacred spaces and Ottoman monumental architecture. The book also includes Kuban's approach to Ottoman history. The period from the founding of Constantinople in 330 to 1750 offers a new reading of its political, social, and architectural aspects.
