- The period of equality did not last long. As deindustrialization began, inequality returned. Capital started to flow out of the manufacturing industry to the real estate and stock markets, resulting in speculation and debt. As the capital competition intensified, the class gap widened even further, with the world’s top 1% eventually making 144 times that of the bottom 50% in 2020. What is noteworthy is that as inequality grows, economic growth slows down.
